We primarily use 100% Genuine Cowhide, a traditional material for satchel making that has been valued for its durability, natural beauty, and ability to develop a unique patina over time.


From time to time, we also offer exclusive top-grain leathers and specialist leathers. Additionally, we can work with materials like English Bridle Leather, and we welcome bespoke requests for specific leathers. If you have a leather from a tannery that meets our requirements (in weight, structure, and size), we’re happy to craft a satchel tailored to your preferences.


Each satchel is meticulously crafted to showcase the natural characteristics of the leather, making every piece truly one of a kind.

Are your leather satchels handmade?

Yes, all of our leather satchels are meticulously handcrafted by our skilled craftspeople at The Leather Satchel Co. workshops.


Each piece is cut to order, tailored to your preferred customisations and specifications. It is then stitched using heavyweight threads and finished by hand with traditional skills perfected over decades. This meticulous process ensures a standard of quality that has earned us a reputation for excellence. What sizes are available?

We offer a variety of satchel sizes to suit your needs, whether you’re looking for a compact everyday bag or a larger satchel for work or study.

Our smallest size, the Hipster Satchel, is just 7 inches wide—perfect for carrying your absolute essentials. On the other end of the spectrum, we produce a 16.5-inch Satchel Briefcase, a true portable office, capable of accommodating everything you need for a busy workday.

Each size is carefully crafted to suit specific uses and carry the items our clients often rely on. For instance:

  • Festival Satchel: Ideal for light essentials, like phones, wallets, and cosmetics, that you want to keep close at hand.

Are the bags lined?

We do not use lining in our leather satchels because we believe in showcasing the natural beauty and integrity of our high-quality leather. Unlike some manufacturers who use lining to mask low-grade leather, all our products are crafted from premium, heavy leather that we are proud to show off.


To ensure the reverse side of the leather looks and feels as good as the outer surface, we apply a currying process. This involves treating, buffing, and finishing the underside of the leather to create a smooth, consistent surface. Currying enhances the leather’s durability, prevents fraying and fluffing, and ensures a refined finish that complements the bag’s overall quality.

Can you change the colour of the inside of my bag?

The raw hides used for our satchels undergo a meticulous process to ensure the highest quality. First, they are drum-dyed to a base colour that perfectly complements the top pigment applied to the outer surface of the leather. This step is carried out by the tannery in carefully managed batches of 50 hides at a time to maintain consistency.


After the base dyeing, the top pigment is meticulously applied to the leather’s outer grain, achieving the desired finish. This, too, is performed in 50-hide batches to ensure uniformity in colour and texture.


Finally, the leather undergoes a traditional currying process, during which the rough flesh grain is smoothed, and waxes and resins are applied to the reverse side. This step creates a smooth, durable backing, ensuring the leather meets our exacting standards for both exterior appearance and interior durability.

What’s the difference between a satchel and a Briefcase satchel?

The difference between a Satchel and a Briefcase Satchel lies in their design, structure, and functionality:


Satchel: The classic satchel has a timeless design, featuring a shoulder strap and a practical front pocket for added storage. It does not include a handle, making it ideal for carrying over the shoulder or across the body. Its design makes it lightweight and versatile, perfect for casual use or as a daily companion for books, laptops, and essentials.


Briefcase Satchel: The Briefcase Satchel is an upgraded variation designed for added structure, durability, and professionalism. It features a reinforced leather panel at the top, which helps the satchel maintain its shape over time. This added structure not only enhances the bag’s durability but also provides better protection for items inside, reducing the risk of bending or twisting.

Why do leather bags get mouldy and how to prevent it?

Leather is a natural material, and as such, it is susceptible to mould when exposed to certain conditions. Mould thrives in damp, humid, or poorly ventilated environments, as these conditions allow moisture to accumulate on the surface of the leather. Over time, this moisture, combined with the organic nature of leather, creates an environment where mould can grow.


Here are some practical steps to prevent mould from forming on your leather bag:

  • Regular Maintenance: Clean and condition your leather bag regularly using high-quality leather care products. This helps to maintain the bag’s natural oils, creates a barrier against moisture and can offer anti-bacterial resistance.
  • Store in a Dry Environment: Avoid storing your bag in damp or humid places, such as basements, attics, or unventilated closets. Instead, choose a cool, dry, and well-ventilated space for storage.
  • Use a Dust Bag: When storing your bag, place it in a dust bag made from breathable material. This allows air to circulate and prevents moisture build-up while protecting the bag from dust and dirt.
  • Reduce Humidity: Consider using a dehumidifier in the storage area to keep the humidity levels in check, particularly during wetter months or in tropical climates.

Does the colour transfer onto clothes?

All our chrome-tanned leathers—including Classic, Modern, Smooth, Neon, Pastel, and Patent—are rigorously rub-tested for colour transfer and boast an exceptional 99.95% colour fastness rating. Our distressed leathers, and our bespoke leathers (such as our Italian Vegetable-Tans, Bridles and Cordovans) undergo different tanning processes and are also rated for durability and performance.


With natural materials like leather (as opposed to synthetics), achieving 100% colour fastness isn’t possible because pigments are added after production rather than being inherent to the material. That said, anything above 99% is considered excellent within the leather industry.


Our distressed leathers are part vegetable and aniline-tanned, while beautifully natural, they may occasionally transfer a small amount of colour if they become very wet or are rubbed against coarse, high-friction fabrics (like heavy denim or canvas). This occurs because the water is helping the dyes and natural oils to move about – but the flip side to this is that any dye that may transfer to your clothes (in these unusual circumstances) will also wash out.


If color fastness is a top priority, we recommend selecting leathers from our Classic, Modern, Neon, Patent, or Metallic ranges for added confidence and durability.

Choose where you'd like the monogram to appear, such as on the front flap or hidden on the front pocket under the flap, so you can only see it when the flap is lifted. Since every item is handmade especially for you and not mass-produced, we have the flexibility to place your monogram wherever you desire.


2. Lettering Color:

The best lettering color for your monogram depends on both the leather color and the intended recipient. For vibrant leather tones, gold-leaf or silver-leaf monogramming pairs beautifully, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication. In contrast, blind/debossed initials complement the rustic and rugged aesthetic of distressed oiled leathers, offering a more understated and timeless look. Please note that our monogramming services are exclusively available for bags purchased directly from The Leather Satchel Co. We do not monogram bags or items from other makers. This is because we cannot guarantee the leather type or how it will react under the pressure and temperatures required for gold-leaf and silver-leaf adhesion. Monogramming requires specific conditions to ensure the lettering adheres properly and maintains its quality over time, and using unfamiliar materials could compromise both the aesthetic and structural integrity of your bag.

If the design aligns with our product roadmap and something very similar is already planned for future development, we may prioritize it for you.


It's important to note that custom adjustments or new roadmap designs typically incur a minimum pattern fee of $100 (on top of the final product cost). Additionally, the development of roadmap products can take several months, as we carefully refine the design, establish efficient production processes, and train our team to ensure consistent quality.


We believe in leveraging our expertise and craftsmanship to create products that benefit a wider audience. As such, we do not offer designs exclusively for individual use. The Leather Satchel Co. is proudly based in Liverpool, England, where we have been established since 1966. We operate from our workshop located in the Interchange Industrial Estate on Wilson Road, in Huyton, Knowsley.

Who owns the company?

The Leather Satchel Co. is a privately owned by the Hanshaw family. Keith and Gail Hanshaw, a husband-and-wife team, are the current joint custodians of the company. It is run according to a set of ethics that is rooted in strong family values.

What is the history behind the company?

The Leather Satchel Co. was established in 1966 in Liverpool, England, with a rich heritage in traditional leather craftsmanship. Between the late 1980s and late 2000s, we were the only classic satchel maker left in England. Many consider us the last remaining and original satchel maker. Where do you source your materials?

We are committed to using the best value-for-money materials to ensure high quality while keeping our products accessible. Our leather is sourced from tanneries across the UK, spanning from Clyde in Scotland to JF & F Baker in Devon. Additionally, we work with tanneries in the Netherlands and Italy, known for their exceptional ecological standards and unparalleled leather quality.

For hardware, we prioritise sourcing from the UK whenever possible. We collaborate with a local foundry, Abbey Saddlery, for some hardware and have UK suppliers for rivets, buckles, and D-rings. For more specialised items, like turnlocks and pushlocks—where no UK manufacturers exist—we turn to Italy, which has a thriving hardware industry.

We also make an effort to source packaging materials locally. Our boxes are made just a few miles away, our notebooks are crafted in Surrey, and the fabric for our dustbags comes from Sam Weller in Yorkshire. Our ropes and twines are sourced from James Lever in Lancashire.

This approach reflects our commitment to quality, sustainability, and supporting local industries wherever possible, ensuring every product meets our exacting standards while honouring traditional craftsmanship.

Are your products ethically made?

We ensure that all our skilled crafts-people in our Liverpool workshops are paid at least the real living wage, reflecting our belief in fair compensation for exceptional work. Our leather is sourced from tanneries in the UK, the Netherlands, and Italy, chosen for their high ecological standards and sustainability practices.


Additionally, our made-to-order production model helps us minimise waste and reduce environmental impact. Every product is crafted with care, respect, and integrity, ensuring that our values are embedded in everything we create.

Do you have a physical store or showroom I can visit?

We used to have a store in the heart of Liverpool city centre at the world-famous Albert Dock. Unfortunately, we had to close it during the COVID pandemic. However, you can still visit our workshop in Liverpool to explore our products and see our craftsmanship up close.


In addition, we have an outlet in Disney World, Florida, where you can find a selection of our products. On special days, one of our team members is available to monogram bags for you while you wait, completely free of charge!

Can I visit your workshop?

Visiting our workshop in Liverpool is a wonderful way to experience The Leather Satchel Co. up close. Located in the Interchange Industrial Estate on Wilson Road, Huyton, Knowsley, our workshop is where all the magic happens.


To ensure a smooth visit, we kindly ask you to book an appointment in advance. This is because we operate on well-planned and carefully scheduled production timelines. Cleaning a leather bag is simple when done correctly, and regular maintenance can help preserve its beauty and longevity. Follow these steps for safe and effective cleaning:


Dust Off the Surface

Use a soft, dry cloth or a soft bristle brush to gently remove dust and debris from the surface of your leather bag. Regularly dusting your bag helps maintain its natural beauty and prevents dirt from settling into the grain of the leather.


Spot Clean Stains

For minor stains, apply a small amount of leather cleanser or saddle soap to a soft cloth and gently wipe the affected area. When cleaning or removing stains, it’s crucial to avoid using too much pressure, as this may damage the surface of the leather. Instead, lightly rub the stain in circular motions—patience is key. It’s better to gently rub a stain 100 times than to press too hard and risk harming the leather’s finish.


While cleaning, always check your cloth regularly for signs of pigmentation transfer. If you notice any color being removed, stop immediately. Some cleaning products can gradually lift the pigmentation from the leather if overused.

If you don’t have a leather cleaner, a very small amount of lukewarm water—or even saliva—can work effectively on easy-to-remove marks.

Use a Leather Conditioner

Apply a small amount of leather conditioner to a soft cloth and gently rub it into the leather using circular motions. The leather may darken slightly at first, but as the moisture settles deep into the grain, it will gradually lighten again.

Ensure you apply the conditioner to both sides of the leather. Our bags are unlined, with the reverse curried to a very high standard, allowing you to condition the underside as well. This ensures nourishment penetrates deeply into the grain from both surfaces.

If you don’t have a high-quality leather conditioner, you can use dubbin or a quality leather balm as an alternative. However, be aware that these products may permanently darken the leather’s tan or pigment. It’s always best to test any new product on a hidden area before applying it to the entire surface.

Dry Thoroughly

Allow the bag to air dry naturally away from direct sunlight or heat sources, once dry the conditioner will have left a residue of specialist coatings and waxes on the surface of the leather. 


Polish and Burnish the Leather

After about 10 minutes or so, it's time to lightly polish the leather to a satin sheen. This polishing will help protect your item against scratches and will also provide some resistance toward water and rain.

Final Tip: Clean your bag regularly to prevent dirt and oils from building up, especially in high-contact areas like handles and straps.

On the other hand, if your bag is used less often and stored in ideal conditions, then a once-a-year routine could be sufficient.


Pay particular attention to the feel of the leather. If it starts to feel dry, or stiff, begins to show signs of cracking, then it’s time to condition it. Regular maintenance not only nourishes the leather but protects it and helps the leather to develop a rich patina over time.

Leather Conditioners: Hanshaw's Elbow Grease, Gold Label Natural Dubbin or Lord Sheraton's Leather Balsam

Use a high-quality leather conditioner to nourish and moisturise the leather, keeping it soft and supple. Products like leather balms or dubbin can also work, but be cautious as they may darken the leather’s color permanently. Always test on a hidden area first.


Soft Cloths and Brushes

Use a soft, lint-free cloth for cleaning, conditioning, and buffing the leather. A soft-bristle brush is helpful for removing dirt from textured or grainy areas and also for final polishing and burnishing.


Care Product Tips: Avoid silicone-based products and avoid general use cleansing wipes, these items can cause more harm than good. If you're not using one of the products we make ourselves or actively endorse then always test any new product on a discreet area before applying it to the entire bag.

Does rain damage leather bags?

Rain can potentially damage leather bags if they are not properly cared for or protected. Leather is a natural material that absorbs moisture, which can lead to staining, discolouration, or even damage the texture when it dries out.

However, with the right precautions and care, your leather bag can withstand occasional exposure to rain without lasting harm.


What to Do if Your Bag Gets Wet

Don’t panic—this can happen to the best of us. Start by emptying your bag completely. Then, fill it with tissue paper or newspaper to help the leather retain its shape and absorb excess moisture. Leave the bag open to air dry naturally in a cool, well-ventilated space.


Do not, under any circumstances, force-drying your bag with direct heat sources like radiators or hairdryers, as this can cause the leather to crack and warp. 


While air-drying may take a few days, it’s the safest way to preserve the integrity of your bag.

Once the bag is completely dry, we would recommend applying a healthy amount of conditioner to replace the oils and moisture that will have been lost from the water saturation and drying process.

How to Protect Your Leather Bag from Rain

Apply a Leather Protectant: Use a high-quality water-repellent spray designed for leather, to create a protective barrier. 3M make the best water-proofers, but it's important to ensure you use one designed specifically for leather and not just a general water-proofing spray. 

Protect Raw Edges: You can use natural beeswax to protect the raw edges of your leather bag. Rub a bar of wax along the edges and seams, ensuring an even application. Once applied, use a cloth to carefully create friction along the seams, generating enough heat to melt the wax into the grain. This process provides additional protection against water and the damage it can cause to your leather bag.


Wipe Dry Immediately: If your bag gets wet, gently pat it dry with a soft, absorbent cloth. Avoid rubbing hard on the leather, as this can push moisture deeper into the leather or damage the surface. The surface will be very delicate when it's moist.


Condition After Drying: Once dry, use a high-quality leather conditioner to replenish the natural oils and maintain the leather’s softness and durability.


With regular care and these proactive measures, your leather bag can remain beautiful and functional even when faced with unexpected rain.

How do I store my leather bag long-term?

Storing your leather bags properly is essential to preserving their beauty and charm, especially for long-term storage. Here are some tips to ensure your leather bag remains in excellent condition while not in use:

Store your leather bag in a place that is dry and has a consistent temperature—not too warm, not too cold. Avoid damp areas such as basements or humid closets, as moisture can lead to mould and mould will damage the leather because it consumes organic materials.

Neatly Store in a Dust Bag
Always store your leather bag in the dust bag provided with your purchase. If you don’t have a dust bag, you can purchase a replacement from us or use any soft, breathable cotton bag or pillowcase as an alternative. Before placing the leather bag in the dust bag, we recommend tidying or coiling up any straps and neatly storing them inside the bag.

Create a Micro-Climate
Once the bag is inside a dust bag, you can place both the bag and the dust bag inside a large zip-lock bag along with a few packets of silica gel to absorb any unwanted moisture. As you seal the zip-lock, leave about an inch of the seal open, and use this gap to squeeze out any excess air by gently hugging the bag against your body. This helps push out as much air as possible. Quickly close the remaining inch of the seal to create an airtight closure.

Ensure the dust bag or cotton cover is in place to provide a protective barrier against the zip-lock bag because long-term direct contact with plastic can cause damage to the surface of leather.

This sealed micro-climate minimizes oxygen and excess moisture, making it difficult for mould to grow and preventing the bag from drying out during changing seasonal climates.

Regular Inspection
For long-term storage, check your bag every 3-6 months. Look for signs of moisture, dryness, or mould, and address any issues immediately by cleaning or conditioning the leather.

Additional Tops Tips: Don’t place heavy items on top of your leather bag to prevent flattening or mis-shaping and apply a light coat of a quality leather conditioner to keep the leather moisturised. 

By following these guidelines, your leather bags will remain in top condition and will be ready for use whenever you need them.

What should I do if my leather bag gets mouldy?

If your leather bag begins to gather mould, don’t worry—it can be cleaned and restored with proper care using our recommended products and techniques.


The key to preventing damage is to regularly check your leather bag for signs of mould. Mould, if left untreated for long periods, can grow quickly and will start to eat into the surface of the leather, causing irreversible damage. If you notice any mould, act promptly by following these steps:


Gently Remove Mould

Use a soft cloth to carefully wipe away the mould from the surface. Be thorough but gentle, as you don’t want to spread the spores deeper into the grain of the leather. Use a separate cloth for this, than you would to apply conditioner, to avoid contamination, as you don't want to just spread the mould all over the bag when conditioning.


Apply Anti-Bacterial Leather Conditioner

After removing the mould with one cloth, use a separate cloth to apply a small amount of Anti-Bacterial Leather Conditioner. Hanshaw's Elbow Grease is formulated with a mild antibacterial agent specifically designed for caring for our satchel leathers. It is the only conditioner we know of that contains a mild antibacterial agent, allowing it to clean and nourish the leather while preventing further mould growth.


After applying the conditioner, it will only need a few minutes to dry, as the leather typically absorbs it effectively without causing any harm.


If you don’t have an antibacterial conditioner, a very mild solution of white vinegar and water can be used as an alternative. To create the mixture, use 1 part white vinegar to 20 parts water, ideally boiling the water beforehand and allowing it to cool before mixing with the vinegar. However, be extremely cautious with this solution, as it could damage the leather or alter its colour. Always test it on an unseen area of the bag first to ensure it’s safe.

Prevent Future Mould Growth

The best way to prevent mould is by following our recommended storage practices, such as using a dust bag, placing silica gel packets to manage humidity, using a grip-seal bag to create a microclimate, and storing your bag in a dry, well-ventilated environment. Regularly inspecting your bags cannot be stressed enough, as it allows you to catch any signs of mould early, keeping your leather in pristine condition.


Once mould has appeared or taken hold of a bag, it will require more frequent care to prevent it from reforming. While it may be nearly impossible to completely remove all traces of mould, consistent use of separate cloths for removal and the application of antibacterial conditioner, along with proper storage, will reduce the mould content to a negligible amount over time.

Pro Tip: Minor scratches, that don't break the surface of the leather, can often massaged out carefully bending the leather and rubbing it with a soft cloth.
